How to Create a PFAS-Free Nursery: The UK Parent's Room-by-Room Guide
Share
What Are PFAS and Why Is Your Nursery a Hotspot?
PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are a family of over 10,000 synthetic chemicals used to make products resistant to water, grease and stains. They're nicknamed 'forever chemicals' because they don't break down in the environment or in our bodies. For adults, long-term exposure is linked to hormonal disruption, immune suppression and developmental issues. For babies, whose systems are still forming, the risks are magnified.
The nursery, perhaps surprisingly, is one of the highest-risk rooms in the home. Waterproof mattress covers, changing mats, soft furnishings and even some cot bumpers can all contain PFAS coatings. Babies spend up to 16 hours a day in their sleep space and spend hours on changing mats and play mats — meaning their exposure is prolonged and consistent. Creating a low-tox nursery isn't about perfection; it's about making informed swaps where they matter most.
Room-by-Room Guide to a PFAS-Free Nursery
The Sleeping Area
The cot mattress is the single most important swap you can make. Many conventional mattresses use synthetic foam treated with flame retardants (often PFAS-based) and are wrapped in waterproof covers that contain fluorinated coatings. Look instead for mattresses with natural fillings — organic wool, natural latex or coconut coir — which are naturally fire-resistant without chemical treatment.
For bedding, choose GOTS-certified organic cotton sheets, blankets and swaddles. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification covers the entire supply chain, from farm to finished product, ensuring no toxic chemicals are used at any stage. Explore our Blankets & Bedding collection for GOTS-certified options curated by our team.
Avoid: conventional waterproof mattress protectors with fluorinated coatings. If you need a waterproof layer, seek out wool-based mattress protectors — wool is naturally water-repellent without any chemical treatment.
The Changing Area
Standard changing mats are typically made from PVC vinyl with a wipe-clean surface achieved through chemical coatings. These can off-gas VOCs and may contain PFAS. Swap to a changing mat made from natural rubber or certified safe materials, paired with an organic cotton changing mat cover that can be washed regularly.
Store nappy cream, lotions and baby toiletries in natural materials where possible — glass or stainless steel rather than plastic containers that may leach chemicals.
Clothing Storage
Wardrobes and drawers made from pressed wood products (MDF, particleboard) can off-gas formaldehyde and other VOCs. Where possible, choose solid wood furniture with water-based, low-VOC finishes. Browse our Nursery & Playroom Furniture collection for options made from sustainable, non-toxic materials.
For clothing itself, fill those drawers with GOTS-certified organic cotton or OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified pieces. OEKO-TEX 100 tests the finished fabric for over 100 harmful substances — a good baseline guarantee even where full organic certification isn't available.
The Play Area
Play mats are a significant concern — many foam play mats are made from EVA foam, which can contain formamide (a chemical that evaporates over time). Opt for natural rubber play mats, organic cotton quilts used as play mats, or certified non-toxic foam alternatives. Explore our Low Tox collection and Plastic Free collection for toys and play accessories that meet our strict vetting criteria.
For soft toys and cushions, look for OEKO-TEX certified or organic cotton outer fabrics and natural fibre stuffing rather than conventional polyester.
What to Look For (and What to Avoid)
Look for:
- GOTS certification — the gold standard for organic textiles, covering the full supply chain
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100 — tests the finished product for harmful substances
- Natural wood furniture with water-based, low-VOC finishes
- Natural fibre fillings — organic wool, cotton, natural latex
- Transparency from brands — any brand that freely shares certifications and materials is a good sign
Avoid:
- Waterproof mattress covers and changing mats with undisclosed chemical coatings
- Synthetic foam mattresses (conventional polyurethane foam) without full ingredients disclosure
- Flame-retardant treated products — natural materials like wool offer inherent fire resistance
- Pressed wood furniture (MDF/particleboard) with formaldehyde-based adhesives
- PVC/vinyl changing mats and play mats
