What is GOTS Certification? Why It Matters for Your Baby's Clothes

What is GOTS?
GOTS stands for the Global Organic Textile Standard — widely considered the world's leading certification for organic textiles. If you've started exploring sustainable or organic children's clothing, you'll have seen the GOTS logo on swing tags and brand websites. But what does it actually guarantee, and why does it matter more than a brand simply claiming their clothes are "organic"?
What GOTS Actually Certifies
This is the critical point: GOTS doesn't just certify the cotton. It certifies the entire supply chain, from the field where the cotton is grown all the way through to the finished garment hanging in a shop.
To achieve GOTS certification, every step in the process must meet strict standards:
- Raw material — the cotton (or other natural fibre) must be certified organic at source, meaning grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilisers, and without GMO seeds.
- Processing — spinning, weaving, dyeing, and finishing must all use approved substances only. GOTS maintains a list of permitted inputs and explicitly prohibits hundreds of harmful chemicals including formaldehyde, PFAS, heavy metals, and phthalates.
- Manufacturing — factories must meet social criteria as well as environmental ones: fair wages, safe working conditions, no child labour, and proper wastewater treatment.
- Labelling — finished products can only carry the GOTS logo if at least 70% of the fibre content is certified organic (for the "made with organic" label) or 95% (for the "organic" label).
Independent third-party auditors inspect every link in the chain annually. There is no self-certification.
Why GOTS Matters More Than "Organic" Labelling
In the UK and EU, the word "organic" on clothing has no legal definition or regulatory protection. A brand can print "organic cotton" on a label based on nothing more than a supplier's verbal assurance — and some do. There is no mechanism to verify the claim.
GOTS changes this entirely. The certification is publicly verifiable: you can search the GOTS database online and check whether a specific brand or factory holds a valid certificate. If a brand claims GOTS certification and doesn't appear in the database, that claim is false.
For parents buying clothes that will be worn next to a baby's skin, mouthed, and washed repeatedly, this distinction matters enormously. GOTS certification means you know — not just hope — that the item is genuinely free from harmful chemical residues.
GOTS vs OEKO-TEX vs Fairtrade: What's the Difference?
- GOTS — certifies the entire supply chain from fibre to finished garment, covering both environmental and social criteria. The most comprehensive certification for organic textiles.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100 — tests the finished textile product for harmful substances. It does not require organic raw materials or audit the supply chain, but it provides reliable assurance that the end product is free from tested harmful chemicals. OEKO-TEX and GOTS are complementary: many GOTS-certified products also carry OEKO-TEX.
- Fairtrade — focuses primarily on fair pricing and social standards for farmers and workers, particularly in cotton farming. It does not prohibit synthetic pesticides or require organic growing methods, though Fairtrade Organic certification combines both.
For baby clothing specifically, GOTS is the most robust choice because it covers both chemical safety and ethical production throughout the chain.
How to Spot Genuine GOTS Certification
Look for the GOTS logo (a green circle with the letters GOTS) on the product's swing tag, label, or packaging. Then verify: go to global-standard.org and search the brand or manufacturer name in the public database. A legitimate certificate will list the certified products and expiry date.
Be wary of phrases like "made with GOTS organic cotton" without a certificate number, or brands that reference GOTS in marketing without carrying the logo on products. Verification takes 30 seconds and gives complete confidence.
